One day project- Backstory of colour

The origins of colour and what they mean

In this task we were tasked with researching a chosen colour and finding out where it originates from, how its made and any other background information about it. The meaning of the colour was also a point of interest.

I knew I wanted to do green but I wasn't sure what shade so I began by researching different shades and picking from these. I settled on Lime green.

I then conducted the research to see what I could find out, there is a lot more information about colour out there than I would have initially suspected.

I then began creating my story by first mocking up the story idea and writing a basic script. I wanted to appeal to children in my design and cover a few elements of the research I had found. The main issue I faced was that it was quite difficult to find certain information and I wanted to make sure it was accurate. A lot of the information I came across did not lend itself particularly well to being used as a story device. More research was perhaps needed to really capture the essence of the colour.

I love the colour green and so this was good fun to work on. I decided to go for only using shades of green including using green paper so there was absolutely no other colour. Using a colour on top of itself is a bit of a no no usually but as Van Gogh demonstrated with his sunflowers, it can be really effective , these rules are more of a suggestion! I like that element of it a lot. The story isn't the best, I didn't take too long writing it and wanted to get stuck in to complete this work by the end of the session. I used pastel pencils to create this but I didn't have any spray to fix the pages so ultimately they have become quite smudgy which is a shame. I tried to include some elements from my research including what the colour represents, where it comes from and how it's made. I kept this in a childish style because I decided to make this for children, a book to learn their colours was the idea. Overall I am happy but I do wonder if I could have pushed my research a little further and created a more complex story; Luckily we will have more opportunities to do so during this module so that's something to think about but absolutely loving the green on green.
