Initial visual development

Image
I have a really strong image in my head for this project. I have always loved the idea of making something look painted and playing with lighting. The way that light bounces off surfaces is really interesting and with a project all about colour what better tool to express its shades. I also like the idea of the lighting being the colour, giving everything a green hue, which fits perfectly with the story Im trying to tell.  This image is of course inspired by the story I found in my research about children at a birthday party dying due to the tainted candles. This second idea is playing around with the concept of death in the story. I was considering doing the story in all shades of green, no other colours. However, I was given some really good feedback and have decided it would be much more effective if the story was in greyscale and the only colour was green. The amount of green could increase along with the story progression. Women at the time used to wear dresses dyed in ...

Scheele’s Green, Research of chosen colour

Image
For my colour story project I really wanted to go with a shade of green, because green has always stood out to me and I feel its one of the less obvious choices since we see it in such abundance in nature.  After doing research on colours and their origins, with a special interest in types of green, I remembered the infamous.    Scheele’s Green. Scheele's green is the name for the shade of green that was created using arsenic, responsible for the deaths of many people.  ''  Swedish  chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, produced a toxic material (in bright green hue) with the use of the noxious chemical, arsenite, which was called Scheele’s Green. People used this material for things like dying paper, fabric, toys, etc. But then, some came to the conclusion that this particular dye was the reason for many deaths. For example, the death of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1821, as his bedroom wallpaper featured the deadly hue.'' People would use this shad...

One day project- Changing images

Image
The final one day project this semester   This is the base for my colour changing design. It could be applied to a lot more designs. The yellow copy, inspired by The metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The green copy, Inspired by Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I enjoyed this project but found it to be quite challenging to come up with ideas. I came up with 6 initial thumbnails and the first few were very basic ideas, this one was the most interested to me. I like the concept of the same image having different applications/meanings depending on the colour and details. If I was to approach this task again I would make my design a lot more elaborate and maybe add some tones rather than having it a solid colour.

One day project- Backstory of colour

Image
The origins of colour and what they mean In this task we were tasked with researching a chosen colour and finding out where it originates from, how its made and any other background information about it. The meaning of the colour was also a point of interest. I knew I wanted to do green but I wasn't sure what shade so I began by researching different shades and picking from these. I settled on Lime green.  I then conducted the research to see what I could find out, there is a lot more information about colour out there than I would have initially suspected. I then began creating my story by first mocking up the story idea and writing a basic script. I wanted to appeal to children in my design and cover a few elements of the research I had found. The main issue I faced was that it was quite difficult to find certain information and I wanted to make sure it was accurate. A lot of the information I came across did not lend itself particularly well to being used as a story devic...

One day project - Experimenting with colour combinations

Image
Experimenting with colour and combinations of colour For this one day project we started off with a blank sheet of colour swatches. The task was to experiment with what colours look good together and how they interact on the page. We were also encouraged to try combinations that we thought might clash to see how that can look and hopefully become inspired.  Page one: This was the first sheet I did and has a mixture of good and bad experiments. I really like the ones of the fruit and veg and the way I have used shadow to make them stand out. These are really small so it was difficult to get a lot of details into it. I find that on the lighter muted colours putting a strong colour on top is essential to make your illustration stand out. I intentionally didn't just stick to the colour wheel suggestions of what colours work together. Playing with negative space was well proved to be quite effective. Some of the simpler designs are the most effective for the space given. I made s...
